As we near the end of the year, we are all trying to get things done before we break for the holiday season. It’s been a long (couple of) year(s) for most people globally and it’s no real surprise that many of our coaching clients are presenting us with current narratives that are filled with worries and anxieties – to all intents and purposes, the language they use seems to indicate that they are not okay!

I have listened to many of my clients over the years in this frame of mind and if I have become aware of it, I have often asked them to do the following exercise: I ask them to draw two tick/check boxes. Under one, I ask them to write “I’m ok” and under the other “I’m not ok”. I then ask them, without overthinking it, to tick the one that applies to them (some ask if they can have a third option in between – and I say no!). All of them that I have asked to do this exercise over what must be about 20 years, have ticked the “I’m ok” box. When we discuss their answer and what’s behind it they all say something similar to this: “It made me realise that I AM ok” and then they might pause before saying something like: “…even though there is some work to be done.”

Isn’t that true of most of us: we are okay! But there is always some work to be done! We don’t need to define “okay” – it’s a feeling; we know what it means even if we don’t articulate it.

This is a good time of year for us coaches to remember that we too are okay! Even if things might be getting on top of us right now, WE ARE OKAY! Take some time to relax and recharge those batteries over the holiday period – there’s time enough to do the work that we need to do on ourselves, our practices, whatever…next year!

In fact, for those of us who believe in gratitude exercises, wouldn’t doing them now be a good start!

Wishing you and your families a joyful, peaceful holiday period and an exceptional 2024!

Until next year!

Be okay
