In Monday Memo

This week’s focus:

For once, just S.T.O.P.!

There’s one thing I know for sure: ALL my clients are in a hurry! ALL of them feel like they don’t have enough time in the year, never mind the day! ALL of them feel like they are on a treadmill – autopilots endeavouring to get things done fast but not really getting to the place they need to be. Sound familiar!

Here’s the thing: we all know deep down what the answer is! The answer is not to go faster on the treadmill – which, after all, is taking you nowhere fast (and yet this is what we try to do!). The answer is to slow down so that you can get off the treadmill and get to where you need to be. The answer is to be less on autopilot and far more conscious in our decision-making in the moment.

So push pause! Use what Timothy Gallwey calls the tool of tools: S.T.O.P. It’s an acronym that helps in virtually any situation and can take as little as a split second. Here is how it works:

  • Stop and step back
  • Think – create a thinking space for a moment; eg what’s going on here?
  • Organise your thoughts or consider your options
  • Proceed – go ahead and do it

Oh, there’s another thing I know for sure: the more you STOP, the more conscious you become about what you are doing in the moment, the quicker you will get to where you need to get! STOP and think about it – NOW!
