THIS WEEK’S FOCUS:
We get what we focus on!
From time to time, whether we are aware of it or not, we focus on (and spend a lot of energy on) stuff that we have absolutely no control or influence over. When we think about it, it just doesn’t make sense that we do this – some of us will spend hours, days, and (many people) years complaining about or fighting for things they absolutely can’t change at all. And all the while, our energy is drained more and more by this inevitably fruitless negativity. In fact, we (although we are probably blaming everyone else) are disempowering ourselves by doing this!
So, if things that we can’t influence drain our energy like that, why don’t we just make the decision to focus our energy on things we do have influence or control over? For example, ask the question: “Even if I am right, what am I going to do about it?” If I realize that even if I write a letter to Bob Mugabe or Julius or tweet the Springbok coach or take our baseball bat out at the next set of traffic lights, I am not going to influence the other person to change their decision or behaviour, then isn’t it better just to go back and invest my energy on things I can influence. Isn’t that more proactive, self-empowering, energizing and self-fulfilling?
Besides, we get what we focus on. When we think about it, whether we say we can cope or say we can’t, we are right – we create self-fulfilling prophecies. Either way, we get what we focus on – so catch yourself at the Battle of the Alamo having your own personal last stand and ask yourself: “What am I going to do about this? What things do I have control over?”
After all, we have the amazing ability to be able to choose how we respond to things. So, let’s get better at it – every day, starting now!
